Elissa el Hadj, the founder of London’s FORM Studio, revealed how thermogenic foods can benefit slimmers.
In an interview with Byrdie, she explained that “they contribute to approximately ten percent of your daily calorie burning capability by simply speeding up the metabolism“.
The products take more energy to digest, making your body burn up fat while processing them.
For this reason, they cause calories to be torched at a faster rate.
Here are six examples of thermogenic foods:
1. Chilli peppers
Spicy foods have been found to boost metabolism by up to 20%.
Chilli peppers also contain capsaicin, a compound that encourages weight loss and improves heart health.
This breakfast staple releases slowly in the body, so can require more energy to digest.
It also stabilises blood sugar, which should keep you feeling fuller for longer.
3. Leafy greens
These fibre-filled foods have thermic effects on the body.
They are also low calorie options for slimmers.
Examples of these veggies include kale, spinach and cabbage.
4. Green tea
Research has shown that the flavonoids and caffeine in green tea can help elevate metabolic rate and increase fat oxidation, which helps to burn fat.
If you want to lose weight you need to drink around two to three cups of green tea a day, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Protein-filled foods often work to speed up the metabolism.
Oily fish, including salmon and mackerel, are rich in the nutrient.
The Omega-3 in these products is also said to encourage fat burn and weight loss.
6. Greek yoghurt
Full-fat Greek yoghurt contains conjugated linoleic acid, which promotes weight loss and fat burning in overweight and obese people, according to a review of 18 studies.
The high-protein dairy product is also a great source of calcium and can boost fat burn and protect muscle during weight loss.
